On the Cover: This banded slate birdstone with a chunky body, upturned tail and long angling neck was found by a grave digger at the Union City cemetery in Darke County, Ohio. It was found prior to 1964 along with a small slate tapered tubular pipe and measures 3 1/2 inches in length, 2 inches in height. It was formerly collected by Harold Buckingham, John Davidson and Earl Mumaw of Versailles, Ohio. Several nicks on the tail were polished over by the ancient maker.
